Phoebus students cook-off for astronaut food recipe selection

Local high school students competing to have their entrée selected as astronaut food for the International Space Station will be preparing their recipe at NASA Langley Research Center on April 16 at 11:45 a.m. for a taste-testing panel sendoff.

The five Phoebus High School students are participating in the High school students United with NASA to Create Hardware, or HUNCH, program with NASA Langley.

The panel send-off provides the students with feedback from Langley employees and an opportunity to practice their presentation before traveling to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The Phoebus team is one of seven selected to prepare their entrée at the Johnson’s food lab for an astronaut evaluation and taste-testing later this month.

The Culinary Challenge is a new HUNCH category incorporating the arts with STEM activities, which engages students in learning about food science and processing food in order to develop a new, tasteful recipe for the ISS.
