NTSB official to discuss first accident involving commercial space launch vehicle at ABA luncheon

Robert L. Sumwalt, National Transportation Safety Board member, will give the luncheon keynote address at the American Bar Association Forum on Air and Space Law’s 2016 Update Conference Feb. 26 at the Park Hyatt Washington in Washington, D.C.

Sumwalt will discuss the NTSB’s investigation into the breakup of the reusable suborbital rocket SpaceShip Two over the Mojave Desert in 2014. The incident was NTSB’s first accident investigation involving a commercial space launch vehicle.

Ben Hirst, the former general counsel and current special counsel for Delta Airlines, is the opening keynote speaker at 8 a.m.

Other sessions will focus on the importance of aviation legislative priorities in the midst of the presidential election; the SPACE Act of 2015 and how it affects private, corporate and government sectors; and the state of aviation climate change policy and law.
