Northrop Grumman Awards $240,000 in STEM Scholarships to Graduates of High School Involvement Partnership

Twelve recent high school graduates from the Baltimore and Annapolis areas are headed off to college this fall with a combined total of $240,000 in engineering scholarships, thanks to their participation in the High School Involvement Partnership (HIP), a mentoring, internship and scholarship program sponsored by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) focused on encouraging student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related (STEM) career fields.

The following local high school graduates will each be receiving a $20,000 STEM-related scholarship from Northrop Grumman payable in $5,000 increments over four years as a result of their successful completion of the two-year HIP program at the company:

Baltimore City
– Nicholas Bryant, a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, who will study computer science at Morgan State University
– Brandice Canty, a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, who will pursue a computer engineering degree at Virginia State University
– Esther Ekanem, a graduate of Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School, who will study mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park
– Jawanza Green, a graduate of National Academy Foundation High School, who will pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at West Virginia Tech
– Christian Ingham, a graduate of Archbishop Curley High School, who will study mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County
– Shaquana Jackson, a graduate of National Academy Foundation High School, who will pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park
– Anika Prettyman, a graduate of Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School, who will study industrial engineering at Morgan State University
– Kelsey Richard, a graduate of Friendship Academy of Engineering and Technology, who will study electrical engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
– Stephen Timmel, a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic High School, who will pursue degrees in mathematics and computer science at Princeton University

Anne Arundel County
– David Blackstone, a graduate of Annapolis High School, who will study computer science at Howard University
– Lauren Harris, a graduate of Annapolis High School, who will pursue a computer science degree at Towson University
– Vance McNees, a graduate of Annapolis High School, who will study electrical engineering at Pennsylvania State University

Now in its 15th year, the HIP program seeks out high school students from Baltimore City and Anne Arundel and Carroll counties who demonstrate the academic excellence and leadership ability necessary to successfully complete college studies in engineering, physics, computer science or math. Participants typically spend their junior and senior years in high school in the program, which involves working one day each month with several Northrop Grumman employee mentors on technology-related projects. HIP participants are also eligible for summer internships at the company.

Students who successfully complete the HIP program are eligible for $20,000 scholarships spread over four years. Scholarship requirements include full-time enrollment in an accredited academic program in engineering, physics, computer science or mathematics and maintenance of a 3.0+ grade-point average.

A total of 295 students from across the nation, including 143 in Maryland, have graduated from the HIP program and gone on to college.
