NATEL EMS has been awarded a multimillion dollar contract from Aerojet Rocketdyne to assemble replacement Lithium Ion Battery Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs) for NASA’s International Space Station (ISS), announced President and CEO Sudesh Arora.

“This new contract is a step forward for NATEL EMS as we meet new challenges in aerospace electronics manufacturing,” said Arora. “This significant opportunity allows us to showcase our ability to manufacture systems, as well as components and microelectronics. It’s another way we at NATEL EMS ‘make amazing things happen’.”

The contract is for two qualification and 27-flight replacement Lithium Ion Battery ORUs for the Space Station. Lithium ion battery technology is lighter and more powerful than the nickel hydrogen batteries now in use on the Space Station.

NATEL EMS has worked on control electronics for the Space Shuttle arm and other similar projects through contracts with NASA. “We pride ourselves on our track record of building reliable space-qualified parts and our numerous examples of rapid facility ramp-ups tailored to specific customer needs,” Arora said. “Every day, our team does their best to reassure Aerojet Rocketdyne that we are a strategic partner focused on assuring mission success with this ISS upgrade.”
