Global Consulting Firm Opens D.C. Office with Focus on Space Technology, Homeland Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 30, 2008 – Phillips & Company, a global business development and strategic communications consulting firm, announced today that NASA Chief of Strategic Communications Robert P. Hopkins will join the firm as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of the inaugural Washington, D.C. regional office.

In addition to managing the growth and development of the new Beltway office, Mr. Hopkins will serve as a principal strategist for the firm’s Space Technology and Commerce and Homeland Security and Defense practice areas helping companies develop growth campaigns in both government and the private sector.

Said Rich Phillips, president of Phillips & Company, “Bob’s strategic insight and leadership at NASA helped define the role and relevance of the Space Economy in our world. His service to our country and his experience in both the public and private sectors will be a tremendous asset to our current and future clients. He is both a visionary and a seasoned practitioner and we are honored to have him at the helm of our new D.C. office.”

In his role at NASA, Mr. Hopkins directed the Offices of Communications Planning, Education, Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Affairs. He also served as the Assistant Administrator for the Office of Communications Planning (OCP), which provides long-term strategic communications messaging and planning across NASA program offices, mission directorates and centers. OCP also manages all agency commercial strategic partnerships and alliances. Previously, Hopkins served as senior advisor to NASA Deputy Administrator Shana Dale.

Said Hopkins, “Phillips is one of the few companies to recognize the strategic value of communications in an organization’s growth. They understand how to build sustainable leadership positions and they have proven themselves to be an innovator at integrating public relations and marketing with core business strategies. I am proud to join them in this important role and look forward to extending their presence and influence in Washington.”

In addition to NASA, Hopkins’ federal service included leadership roles at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Prior to joining government, Hopkins held management roles with several strategic communications firms working in the high-tech sector and worked with several political campaigns. A Navy veteran, Hopkins earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from the George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management.

“Our clients know that we are committed to hiring and retaining the best and brightest minds in communications, marketing and business development,” said Rich Phillips. “The launch of our Beltway office under the leadership of Mr. Hopkins is an important step to our growth, but most important, it is representative of the superior value we deliver to our clients by helping them achieve their long-term business and strategic objectives.”

The regional Washington, D.C. office will be based in Bethesda, Maryland.
