MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. – NASA Research Park (NRP), Moffett Field, Calif., will host a Disaster Resiliency Panel discussion 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 31, 2011. Media are invited.

The Disaster Resiliency Panel discussion is the fourteenth in the NRP Exploration Lecture Series, which has hosted Nobel Prize Laureates, astronauts, scientists and authors. The Disaster Panel is one example of the many research and development, and education collaborations ongoing between many of the 80 plus NRP partners from industry, universities, non-profits and NASA’s Ames Research Center.

The panelists will present their individual disaster-related activities, while highlighting joint collaborative activities and how their NRP location and relationships are enhancing their abilities to provide critical assistance before, during and after disasters.

“NRP public-private partnerships are about collaborating and accomplishing more together than acting individually, by leveraging resources, talent and facilities for technology acceleration, STEM education, and, for the organizations these panelists represent, disaster resiliency,” said Michael Marlaire NRP director.

WHAT: Panel experts, each engaged in disaster management, will present individual or joint activities that encourage a more productive and flexible role for future research and development, training and coordinated collaborative disaster efforts.

WHO: Guest speakers will include Bob Dolci, director of Ames’ Center Operations (Acting); Martin Griss, director of Carnegie Mellon University, Silicon Valley and the Disaster Management Initiative; Steve Jordan, chief executive officer of the National Disaster Resiliency Center (NDRC), Tore Andre Nilsen, founder and vice president of Research and Innovation, IntraPoint; and Paul Callahan, director of Homeland Security Programs at SRI International. Panel moderator will be Daniel Meer, assistant director, Superfund Division, Emergency Response and Preparedness, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 9.

The panelists will discuss the following topics:

. Bob Dolci: “Doing our part to help provide a more resilient community”
. Martin Griss: “Community resilience: what should one do?”
. Steve Jordan: “The NDRC as a platform of opportunity for collaboration in the enhancement of emergency management and disaster preparedness”
. Tore Nilsen: “International crisis management issues”
. Paul Callahan: “Harnessing technology for homeland security”

WHERE: The NASA Research Park, Moffett Field, Calif., building 3, Ballroom. NASA Ames is located off U.S. Highway 101 at NASA Parkway.
