Green Hills Software Inc., the technology leader in device software optimization (DSO) and real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center has chosen the Green Hills Platform for Software Defined Radio (SDR) with Spectrum Signal’s flexComm™ SDR-4000 reconfigurable, multi-function communications platform. The Green Hills solution provides NASA with the capabilities needed for rapid design, development and refinement of its next-generation Space Telecommunications System Architecture (STRS).

The Green Hills SDR Platform for NASA includes:

— the ultra-secure and reliable INTEGRITY RTOS, the only POSIX.1- conformant RTOS certified by the IEEE to the latest POSIX 1003.1 standard

— advanced dual-mode IPv4 networking stack support

— advanced waveform design and development tools to help users move from concept to deployment as fast as possible

“The INTEGRITY-based SDR-4000 delivers a complete, integrated SDR hardware and software solution that is optimized for rapid prototyping and deployment,” said Michael Farley, president of Spectrum Signal. “NASA selected this platform because of its ability to aid the availability of its advanced, scalable, reconfigurable and upgradeable future STRS radio architecture.”

The use of SDR and STRS technology provides NASA with the capability to support advanced space and ground-based communications operations while reducing the cost of future missions. The cost reduction can be achieved through the reduction and consolidation of legacy radio equipment by supporting both current and future radio links from one radio platform.

“We are pleased that NASA has chosen the Green Hills Platform for SDR to accelerate the development and deployment of their STRS Architecture,” commented Dan O’Dowd, founder and chief executive officer of Green Hills Software. “Their selection of Green Hills Software highlights our technology strength and commitment in delivering secure, reliable RTOS technology to the SDR market.” NASA is now in the process of developing and refining this Space Telecommunications Radio System, with demonstrations planned in 2007.
