NASA scientists provide opportunity to educate the next generation
High school and college students will soon have an exciting opportunity to learn about the latest research in information technology from NASA scientists.
On Sept. 7, 2004, in collaboration with San Jose State University, San Jose, Calif., the Computing, Information and Communications Technology (CICT) program office at NASA Ames Research Center, located in California’s Silicon Valley, will offer a free Web-based Advanced Aerospace Technology course to inspire students to pursue careers in math and science.
“I think it will be a very exciting course highlighting NASA’s development of advanced technology needed for scientific research and space exploration,” said Robert Shiner, manager of NASA CICT Education Outreach.
The course highlights research and possible career paths at NASA. The goal of the course is to create a better understanding of the scientific and technical work within NASA’s CICT program and emphasize the continuing need for advanced study in scientific and mathematical fields. NASA researchers and scientists will teach the eight course sessions.
The course will be Web cast on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, Sept. 7-22, 2004. Sessions will cover intelligent flight controls; selecting research locations on Mars; the inter-planetary Internet; personal assistants in space; science discovery using computation and observation; generating and verifying aerospace software; speed-learning technology and aerospace careers; and neural electric machine control.
The course is free to all registrants. Students who would like to earn college credit can register with San Jose State University. The final day to register is Sept. 7, 2004. Interested persons may audit or watch the Web cast at no cost.
Established in 2001, the CICT Program is a NASA-wide effort designed to address advanced agency requirements in computing and information and communications technology.
