An international team of NASA and university researchers has found the
first direct evidence of a phenomenon predicted in 1918 using Einstein’s
theory of general relativity — that the Earth is dragging space and time
around itself as it rotates. The paper appears in Nature magazine today,
and confirms Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

TELECONFERENCE:

Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. EDT.

— Listen-and-log-on news briefing, summary of science findings, 1 p.m. to
2 p.m. EDT.

Reporters who would like to participate in the briefing should call
1-800-619-7394, Password: Einstein. The teleconference will last
approximately one hour.

Participants:

— Dr. Erricos C. Pavlis of the Joint Center for Earth System Technology,
a research collaboration between NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center,
Greenbelt, Md., and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Dr.
Pavlis is a co-author of the study.

— Dr. Michael Salamon, Discipline Scientist for Fundamental Physics, in
the Universe Division, Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters,
