NASA Invites Media to First-Ever Silicon Valley Solar System Showcase
NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley invites members of the media to cover a public event called the NASA Silicon Valley Solar System Showcase, to be held at the Ames’ conference center on Friday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. PDT.
This is the inaugural event in a series of small-scale open house opportunities for the public to explore NASA research across various topics. The goal of these events is to share the incredible and inspirational research conducted at Ames and immerse the public in NASA’s mission.
The theme of the event is NASA’s research within the solar system and beyond – across celestial bodies in our neighborhood, and planets Ames scientists are finding across the galaxy – but this also includes research conducted on and around Earth, encompassing aeronautics and the International Space Station.
One unique aspect of the event will be the exhibit layout inspired by our home solar system. Themed exhibits and demonstrations will allow visitors to tour an array of Ames research. NASA experts also will offer lightning talks on a variety of subjects.
Topics covered in the Solar System Showcase will include:
Searching for Potentially Habitable Planets: The Kepler and K2 Missions
SOFIA: Observing the Solar System and Beyond from 40,000 ft.!
New Horizons and Pluto science
Space biosciences
Swarms of small satellites
Engineering small satellites and technology demonstrations
Mars helicopter concept
Meteorites and astrobiology
Humans and technology working together for safety, efficiency and mission success
Partnering with NASA
NASA expects around 2,000 registered attendees across the event duration. Due to building capacity, the number of attendees is limited, and online registration is required.
