NASA Hosts July 10 Online Media Briefing on Solar System Finding

NASA will host its first Google+ Hangout news briefing at 1 p.m. EDT Wednesday, July 10, on a new finding from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission.

The briefing will be shown live on YouTube, NASA Television and the agency’s website. Journalists may participate in the briefing and ask questions by phone by contacting Steve Cole at 202-358-0918 or stephen.e.cole@nasa.gov with their affiliation by 10 a.m. July 10.

Since its launch in 2008, IBEX has been observing the interactions between the solar wind and the interstellar medium at the edge of our solar system. The briefing will present new observations of the outermost boundary of our solar system’s heliosphere, the region of space influenced by our sun.

The panelists for the briefing are:

— David McComas, IBEX principal investigator and assistant vice president for space science and engineering, Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, Texas

— Arik Posner, IBEX program scientist, NASA Headquarters, Washington

— Eric Christian, IBEX mission scientist, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.

— Brenda Dingus, astrophysicist, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, N.M.

Google+ Hangouts allow as many as 10 people or groups to chat face-to-face, while thousands more can watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. NASA’s social media followers may submit questions on Google+ or Twitter using the hashtag #askNASA in advance and during the event. Before the hangout begins, NASA will open a thread on its Facebook page where questions may be posted.

The hangout can be viewed live on NASA’s Google+ page or on the NASA Television YouTube channel. To join the hangout, visit NASA’s Google+ page at:
