NASA Astronauts visit Brigham City and Airfield

NASA Astronauts Steve Smith and John Young will visit Brigham City and
Clearfield on Dec. 6 to present Silver Snoopy Awards to fifteen Thiokol
Propulsion employees.

Smith and Young will make the first Snoopy presentations at Thiokolís
Clearfield facility at 10:15 a.m. Presentation of the second set of
Silver Snoopy Awards to the Brigham City honorees will be at 12:30 p.m.,
following a luncheon for Snoopy recipients at the Brigham City location
at 11:45 a.m.

The Silver Snoopy is awarded in recognition of the honoreeís outstanding
performance, contributions to flight safety and mission success. Each
recipient receives a sterling silver Snoopy lapel pin that has flown on
a Space Shuttle mission, certificate of appreciation, and commendation
letter signed by the astronaut.

Selected as an astronaut in September 1962, Young is the first person to
fly in space six times. He explored the surface of the Moon during the
Apollo 16 mission in 1972 and commanded the first shuttle flight, STS-1,
in 1981. Currently, Young serves as Assistant Director to the NASA
Johnson Space Center (JSC) for the technical, operational and safety
oversight of all Agency Programs and activities for JSC.

Steve Smith is a veteran of three space flights covering 12 million
miles and five space walks totaling over 35 hours. He joined NASA in
1989 in the Mission Operations Directorate. He was selected as an
astronaut candidate by NASA in March 1992 and reported for training in
August 1992. Smith currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Astronaut
Office.

The astronauts are willing to do print and electronic media interviews
depending on schedule constraints.
