NASA Astronaut to Speak at International Conference

The Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists will host its 32nd Annual International Symposium and Career Fair Oct. 19-21. Event organizers say the goal is to “nurture great minds in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez will be the keynote speaker at a dinner Oct. 20. The black tie affair begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Houston. Hernandez, who grew up in a family of migrant farm workers from Mexico, will discuss the challenges he faced while pursing his dream of becoming an astronaut.

Hernandez was selected by NASA in May 2004. He is currently assigned to the Shuttle Branch to support Kennedy Space Center Operations for shuttle launch and landing preparations. He will work various technical assignments until assigned to a spaceflight as a mission specialist.

To schedule an interview with Hernandez contact Dana Davis, Astronaut Appearances Office, at 281-244-0933.
