NASA Astronaut, Iowa Native Visits Students and Alumni

NASA astronaut and Iowa native James Kelly will participate in a series of school visits in Muscatine, Iowa, Sept. 7-8 to inspire students to achieve big dreams. He will also speak at the 50-year reunion of Muscatine High School’s Class of 1956.

During his visits, Kelly, born and raised in Burlington, will deliver a multimedia presentation, drawing upon his childhood in Iowa and his experiences as an astronaut.

Below is a schedule of his appearances open to the media:

Sept. 7, 2006

10 a.m. — Central Middle School, 901 Cedar Street, Muscatine

1:30 p.m. — West Middle School, 600 Kindler Ave., Muscatine

Sept. 8, 2006

9:30 a.m. — Muscatine High School, 2705 Cedar St., Muscatine

7 p.m. — Muscatine High School Class of 1956 Reunion, Dinner at Holiday Inn – Muscatine, 2915 N. Hwy. 61, Muscatine

Selected by NASA in April 1996, Kelly reported to Johnson Space Center in August of that year. He served in the Shuttle Branch, the International Space Station Branch and the Astronaut Support Personnel team responsible for shuttle launch preparation.

Kelly was the pilot on STS-102 in 2001 and the Return to Flight mission STS-114 in 2005. He has logged more than 643 hours in space.
