NASA Astronaut, Hometown Hero to Visit Denver

Colorado native and NASA astronaut Steve Swanson will be honored at the Denver Nuggets basketball game on April 9. Swanson will participate in pregame activities as the team hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Pepsi Center.

Swanson will be available for broadcast media interviews the morning of the game from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. MDT. To schedule an interview with Swanson, contact Lindsay Cunningham at 281-483-2924. During his visit, Swanson will make other appearances to educate and excite Denver youth about space exploration and NASA science research and technology that benefits life on Earth. Details of his appearances include:

Friday, April 8 Noon – Presentation at The Children’s Hospital in Denver.

Saturday, April 9

11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. – Participate in activities at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science to celebrate the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight.

Swanson was born in Syracuse, N.Y., but considers Steamboat Springs, Colo., his hometown. He graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1979, received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering physics from the University of Colorado, a master’s from Florida Atlantic University and a doctorate from Texas A&M.

Swanson joined the NASA team at the Johnson Space Center in 1998. He was selected as an astronaut candidate in May 1998. Swanson flew on STS-117 in 2007 and STS-119 in 2009. He has logged more than 600 hours in space.

Swanson joins a team of astronauts this year who are returning to their hometown regions to celebrate 10 years of human habitation on the International Space Station.
