MULVILLE NAMED ASSOCIATE DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR

NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin selected NASA’s Chief
Engineer, Dr. Daniel R. Mulville, as the space agency’s Associate
Deputy Administrator, effective January 1, 2000. He replaces
General John R. Dailey, who is leaving to head the National Air &
Space Museum.

As Associate Deputy Administrator, Mulville will plan, direct
and manage the daily operations and reinvention activities of the
Agency.

“NASA’s Associate Deputy Administrator is my most senior
advisor on Agency operations, and I am very pleased that Dan
Mulville has agreed to accept this position,” Goldin said. “Dan
has done an outstanding job over the past four years as NASA’s
Chief Engineer, and I look forward to working with him in his new
position.”

As the Agency’s Chief Engineer since 1995, Mulville has been
responsible for overall review of the technical readiness and
execution of all NASA programs, ensuring that development efforts
and mission operations of the agency are conducted on a sound
engineering basis.

Prior to Mulville’s appointment as Chief Engineer, he was the
Director of the Engineering and Quality Management Division in the
Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, responsible for
development of NASA’s engineering and quality assurance standards
for design and development of spacecraft and aeronautics systems.
From 1986 to 1990, Mulville was Deputy Director of the Materials
and Structures Division in NASA’s Office of Aeronautics and Space
Technology.

Mulville served as the Structures Technology Manager at the
Naval Air Systems Command from 1979 to 1986. He led the
development of structural design, test, and certification methods
and was the program manager for development of composites for the
AV-8B, F/A-18 and advanced aircraft and missile programs.

He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the NASA
Outstanding Leadership Medal and the NASA Exceptional Service
Medal and has received the Meritorious and Distinguished Executive
Rank Awards for management and leadership.

Mulville received his bachelor of mechanical engineering
degree in 1962 and master of science degree in engineering in 1966
from the George Washington University and a doctorate in
structural mechanics from Catholic University in 1974. He
attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1985-86.
