Fernando R. Miralles-Wilhelm, Dean, College of Science, is serving on an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment as a Senior Research Advisor with the Minority University Research and Education Project (MU REP) to support NASA’s strategy for STEM Engagement.

As part of this position, Miralles-Wilhelm will create unique opportunities for a diverse group of faculty and students to contribute to NASA’s research portfolio in fields of exploration and discovery across the agency. He will also help build a diverse future STEM workforce by engaging students in authentic learning experiences with NASA staff, content, and facilities, and attract diverse groups of students to STEM through learning opportunities that provide connections to NASA’s mission and work. This mobility assignment provides mutual benefit to Miralles-Wilhelm and Mason. Miralles-Wilhelm will gain a deeper insight into the technical missions that NASA is leading. This will allow for further interaction with the NASA subject matter experts to engage in research, mission strategic planning, process and policy development, as well as program management.

Miralles-Wilhelm received $267,762 from NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center for this project. Funding began in August 2021 and will end in August 2022.
