Lockheed Martin Space Systems Names Jeffrey Harris President of Missiles & Space Operations in Sunnyvale, California
Jeffrey K. Harris, an executive with 26 years of experience in government and
commercial programs, has been named President of Lockheed Martin Space
Systems Company-Missiles & Space Operations, based in Sunnyvale,
Calif. Harris has served since April 2000 as President, Special
Programs for Space Systems.
“Jeff’s track record for successful strategic planning and
execution of critical national programs will be valuable to our goal
of delivering innovative solutions to address vital requirements of
key customers,” said Albert E. Smith, Executive Vice President of
Space Systems Company, in announcing the appointment, effective March
16. “His outstanding experience and dedication will serve us extremely
well in building on the recent success we have had at Missiles & Space
Operations.”
Harris replaces Anthony G. Tuffo, who announced his retirement
after a 34-year career with Lockheed Martin. Prior to leading Special
Programs, Harris was President of Space Imaging where he played a
pivotal role in bringing one-meter resolution imagery to the
commercial marketplace. Missiles & Space built the IKONOS satellite
that led to this achievement.
Harris began his career with the Central Intelligence Agency in
1975 as a photo technologist at the National Photographic
Interpretation Center. In 1978, he joined the CIA’s Office of
Development and Engineering, which is responsible for satellite
development programs. He served as Chief of System Analysis and
Associate Director of several large Information System acquisitions.
During this period, he also managed research and development for space
technologies.
In June 1993, Harris was named Associate Executive Director for
Intelligence Community Affairs and in May 1994, became Assistant
Secretary of the Air Force for Space. He also served as Director of
the National Reconnaissance Office, the organization responsible for
the acquisition and operation of all U.S. government space-based
reconnaissance systems.
Harris has received numerous awards for his outstanding
contributions to the nation, including the National Intelligence
Distinguished Service Medal, the NRO Medal for Distinguished Service,
the CIA Distinguished Intelligence Medal, two CIA Intelligence Medals
of Merit, the General James V. Hartinger Award for Military Space
Achievement and an Aviation Week Aerospace Laurel Citation. He has
also participated in numerous DoD and intelligence community task
forces and studies.
Harris received a Bachelor of Science degree in Photographic
Science and Instrumentation from Rochester Institute of Technology in
1975.
