At today’s 22nd National Space Symposium, the iRobot PackBot® Tactical Mobile Robot will be inducted into the 2006 Space Technology Hall of Fame. iRobot Corp. (NASDAQ:IRBT – News), along with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will be recognized as the innovating organizations behind PackBot’s technology. The Space Technology Hall of Fame honors technologies and the innovators who transformed space technology into commercial products that improve life here on Earth.

“The iRobot PackBot is just one example of why what we do in space matters,” said Space Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Elliot G. Pulham. “In this case, the exploration of the universe is being used to save the lives of soldiers serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Currently more than 300 PackBot robots are deployed worldwide and are primarily used to identify and dispose of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). PackBot robots have performed tens of thousands of missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and are credited with saving scores of soldiers’ lives.

“Advanced robot technology, like the PackBot, has many important applications — from space exploration and assisting soldiers on the battlefield to cleaning homes,” said Vice Admiral Joe Dyer (U.S. Navy, Ret.), executive vice president and general manager, iRobot. “PackBot’s induction into the Space Technology Hall of Fame is a testament to iRobot’s ability to build upon its proven technological achievements to create more advanced robots.”

Since 1988, the Space Technology Hall of Fame has honored 52 technologies and the innovators who transformed space technology into commercial products that improve life here on Earth. The Space Foundation, in cooperation with NASA, established the Space Technology Hall of Fame to increase public awareness of the benefits that result from space exploration programs and to encourage further innovation. A complete list of all Space Technology Hall of Fame inducted technologies and innovating organizations and individuals can be found online at www.SpaceTechHallofFame.org.
