IGOS Open Session to be held in Kyoto

Media representatives and members of the public are invited to the IGOS
Open Session to be held in Kyoto, Japan, on November 7 (Wednesday), 2001.

Today, understanding of process in the Earth environment has gained its
importance more than ever.

The enhancement of such understanding requires global observation and
data collection, which is beyond the capacity of any particular
government or an international organization. In 1998, Integrated Global
Observing Strategy (IGOS) Partnership was formed to provide a
comprehensive framework to harmonize the common interests of space and
ground based systems for global observation of the Earth.

The Open Session will be held part of 8th IGOS Partnerships’ Meeting,
which will be held on November 8 (Thursday) following the Open Session.
Youji Furuhama, Executive Director of Office of Satellite Technology,
Research and Applications at NASDA acts as chair of this Meeting.

This Open Session includes the reports of programs in global observation
by the responsible persons in research programs, space agencies, and
the major international organizations such as “Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC)”, in the field of ocean, carbon cycle, and
atmospheric chemistry. There will also be discussion about how the
global observations should be realized and conducted.
