Glenn Mahone Named Acting Chief of NASA Strategic Communications
NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe named Glenn Mahone as the agency’s Acting
Chief of Strategic Communications, effective immediately. Mahone also will
continue to serve as Assistant Administrator for Public Affairs and Senior
Advisor to the Office of Administrator.
As head of strategic communications, Mahone’s primary responsibility will be to
develop NASA wide communication strategies to better communicate the agency’s
mission of exploration and discovery with a variety of internal and external
audiences.
“It is important that NASA begin to speak with one voice across all projects and
programs,” said Administrator O’Keefe. “Glenn is a talented communicator; his
perspective and experience are vital to the success of our communication
strategies as we assess our resources and refocus them in a more effective
manner.”
Mahone was appointed Assistant Administrator for Public Affairs in Jan. 2002. He
is the official spokesperson for NASA and the senior official responsible for
advising the Administrator and the agency’s senior leadership regarding all
aspects of public affairs.
He was first selected to serve the Office of Administrator in April 2000 as a
senior advisor and press secretary. He provided guidance, counsel and coordinated
the Administrator’s appearances for national and local events involving the White
House, congressional members, aerospace industry leaders and the general public.
Mahone was named Acting Associate Administrator for Public Affairs in Aug. 2001.
In this position, he assumed responsibility for planning, developing and
executing public affairs activities across the entire agency, including
Headquarters and NASA’s 10 field centers.
Managing a staff of more than 300 communications professionals, he sets policy
for print and broadcast news releases, development and use of mission video, news
conferences and other media briefings, exhibits, speakers, public tours and
visitor centers. He also serves as publisher for NASA’s highly popular Internet

communication strategies,” added Administrator O’Keefe. “He’s helped direct the
largest multimedia overhaul in the agency’s history and knows how to use these
emerging technologies to help best tell our important story to the NASA Family
and the American people.”
Before joining NASA, Mahone served as the senior advisor to the chair of the U.S.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from September 1999 to April 2000,
serving as the commission’s communications strategist. He directed the staff in
the preparation of speeches, talking points and other written material for
internal and external use.
From July 1997 through August 1999, Mahone was the Commercial Sales and Marketing
Manager for ADT/Tyco Inc. in Baltimore.
His previous experience includes work as Management Consultant to the President
and CEO of Stephens Engineering Company, Inc., Lanham, Md., and Consultant for
Employment and Training for U.S. Department of Labor in Washington. He was also
the Vice President and Director of Sales Training and Development for FirstSouth
Savings and Loan, Little Rock, Ark., and Director of Information Services and
Press Secretary at the Office of the Arkansas Secretary of State in Little Rock.
As Director of Public Affairs for KTHV (CBS) television in Little Rock, Mahone
was responsible for political reporting and media relations. He hosted a weekday
news variety program and a weekly political affairs broadcast. He supervised
personnel administration for 270 station employees, including handling all
recruitment, interviewing and benefits coordination.
Mahone received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Speech from the
University of Central Arkansas with a Minor in Journalism. He has extensive
training in communications strategy, crisis-communications and human resources.
He is also a graduate of the IBM Marketing and Communications Program.
