Visit the Genesis mission outreach Web site at: http://genesismission.jpl.nasa.gov/index.html

View the Spacecraft

On the Genesis mission Web site, we talk a lot about the science of the mission as it relates to the Genesis spacecraft. You can see the science canister as it will appear while in orbit and view the collector arrays, the concentrator, and the solar wind monitors at http://www.genesismission.org/mission/craft/index.html When you point your cursor to a labeled item, that piece is highlighted on the spacecraft and a descriptor that outlines its function appears. For best results, we recommend that you install the current version of your chosen browser.

Public Modules

Genesis offers modules–units designed for our Web site users–to help them find out about the scientific building blocks of the mission. Public modules focus on the basic science principles used by Genesis scientists and engineers as they design and implement the first sample return mission of the new millennium. You can access a public module on how sunlight and solar heat are made at: http://www.genesismission.org/science/mod3_SunlightSolarHeat/index.html Still haven’t satisfied your curiosity? Would you like to know how scientists know what is going on inside the sun? How has our understanding these topics changed over the years? Check out A Closer Look http://www.genesismission.org/science/mod3_SunlightSolarHeat/closerlook.html for in-depth information about this science topic.

Genesis Facts

Would you like a quick overview of the Genesis mission? How about short, informative texts with graphics and photos that provide specific mission and astronomy information? Print-optimized fact sheets http://www.genesismission.org/educate/kitchen/resource/factsheets/index.html can be printed from the Genesis Web site. They are available in Portable Document Format (PDF) as a means to preserve formatting and to insure the best possible print quality. Adobe’s Acrobat Reader 4.0 is required to view and/or print, and the site provides the necessary link for the free download. Watch for upcoming fact sheets translated into Spanish!

Meet the People

Eileen Stansbery is not your typical rocket scientist. She serves as Contamination Control Lead for the Genesis mission in her role as Assistant Chief, Planetary Science Branch of Johnson Space Center. http://www.genesismission.org/people/Stansbery/stansbery-index.html
Eileen makes sure that the collector materials remain free of contaminants during the mission. She needs “to know how much contamination we can accumulate on the collector surfaces and still get good science.” Eileen credits her career in space research to having a persistent interest in how things work. When she’s not working on Genesis, Eileen and her husband spend a lot of their time and energy flying their plane. It’s a Chinese military trainer called a Nanchang CJ-6A -the model of plane still in use as a trainer for the People’s Republic of China Air Force. Eileen has learned aerobatic flying. Do you go to airshows? You might see Eileen flying in formation!
