Former Astronaut Sally Ride to Give Keynote Address At SAE Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Conference

Dr. Sally K. Ride, former
astronaut and Professor of Physics, University of California, San Diego, is
scheduled to give the Keynote Address, Tuesday, June 4, 8:00 a.m. at the SAE
International Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Conference & Exhibition
(AMTC), June 3 – 7, 2002, Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, Connecticut, USA.

Also slated to speak at the Keynote Address is The Honorable Donald L.
Evans, U. S. Secretary of Commerce.

Sally Ride was selected for astronaut training in 1978 and flew in space
twice: first in 1983 aboard the space shuttle Challenger and second in 1984
also aboard Challenger, on STS-41G.
Dr. Ride is currently a professor of
physics at the University of California, San Diego.
She is also co-founder
and CEO of Imaginary Lines, Inc., a company dedicated to encouraging more
young girls of middle school age to pursue math and science.
Dr. Ride, a
former member of the President’s Committee of Advisors on Science and
Technology, has received the Jefferson Award for Public Service, and has twice
been awarded the National Spaceflight Medal.

Don Evans is the 34th Secretary to lead the Department of Commerce.
He
oversees a diverse Cabinet agency of 40,000 workers and a $5 billion budget
that promotes American business and gathers vast quantities of economic and
demographic data, issues patents and trademarks, helps set industrial
standards, forecasts the weather and researches the oceans.
He is a key
member of President Bush’s economic policy team and special task force on
energy.

SAE’s AMTC is the manufacturing-process benchmark meeting for the
aerospace industry.
Of the 700 industry personnel traditionally found in
attendance, 29% are fleet maintenance/test engineering specialists, with the
second largest representation, and 17% from production and quality control.
