The annual Planetworkshops forum on sustainable development began today in Evian, France, with ESA as a partner. The think-tank combines reflection and action with a view to promoting sustainable development.

This year, 850 participants from 64 countries have gathered for the three-day event.

Since 2006, the Planetworkshops have grown in influence and in the diversity of participants. Today, they include opinion leaders such as industry chief executives, the public and private sectors, EU governments and regional representatives, experts in sustainable development, international organisations, researchers and academics.

At this year’s event, ESA’s Coordination Office on Sustainable Development will deliver key messages on ESA’s role and commitments.

ESA’s Director responsible for this activity, Giuseppe Morsillo, will consider the question: ‘How can space contribute to a sustainable future?’ in one of the plenary sessions.

By participating in this forum, ESA’s Director General is emphasising the importance of bringing awareness to a large and varied international audience on the ways space applications contribute to improving our daily life and the vital role they play in monitoring and caring for the planet. It is also demonstrating how space is a valuable asset for constructing and sustaining tomorrow’s society.
