Earlier today, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate. This is the third special report to be released out of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment and is the first report to focus exclusively on the impacts of climate change on the world’s oceans and ice.

Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) made the following statement.

“The findings of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate are dire and show once again the very real implications of this climate crisis. There is however hope that if we take this issue seriously and invest in reducing emissions and both mitigation and adaptation strategies that we might be able to prevent the worst-case scenario from becoming reality. There is no longer time for debate. We cannot continue to watch extreme weather and rising sea level take lives and sink communities. I ask my colleagues to put politics aside so we can work together to help leave the planet better than we found it, not devastatingly worse.”
