Campion Named News Chief at Goddard Space Flight Center

Edward S. Campion has been named News Chief in the Office of Public Affairs at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. In this position, he is responsible for managing Goddard’s efforts to provide information on Goddard’s programs and activities to the news media.

Before his current assignment, Campion worked at Johnson Space Center in Houston from November 1996 through January 2001 where he managed the newsroom and television support of the center’s human space flight efforts with the Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs. He also served as a mission commentator on NASA Television for Space Shuttle launches, on-orbit and landing activities.

Campion has an extensive background in national media relations, government and community relations with almost 20 years of experience since beginning his career with NASA in May 1982 as a member of the Headquarters newsroom staff.

>From late 1984 to January 1986, he served as the lead public affairs spokesperson for NASA’s Teacher in Space Project, coordinating media activity during the TSP national selection process. Following the selection of Christa McAuliffe and Barbara Morgan as prime and backup candidates, Campion continued overseeing TSP public affairs during mission training in preparation for the launch of Challenger on Space Shuttle mission STS 51-L. Following the Challenger accident, Campion was a part of the NASA team supporting a Presidential Commission’s investigation into the disaster.

In 1989 he was named as the Public Affairs Officer for the Office of Space Flight and for the next seven years he coordinated NASA’s public information efforts for almost 50 Space Shuttle missions.

During this period Campion also contributed to the planning and coordination of the joint Space Shuttle-Mir Space Station program with several tours of duty in the Moscow Mission Control Center.

Campion is a native of Northern Virginia and now resides in Annapolis, MD. He graduated from Annandale High School, Annandale, Virginia in 1977 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA in 1981. He is also a former Director and Vice President with the Arlington Virginia Junior Chamber of Commerce.
