The National Space Grant Distinguished Service Award was established to recognize an individual whose accomplishments are national or international in scope. The accomplishments should be in any field of science, engineering, or education as related or applied to scientific, aeronautic, aviation, or space endeavors.

The inaugural award was presented in March 2003 to former Senator and Secretary of the Treasury Lloyd M. Bentsen for his visionary work in creating the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Act. Future awardees should have similarly visionary accomplish-ments that are clearly beyond the scope of their regular employment functions.

Nominations are accepted from all sources, including self-nominations. When submitting a nomination, the following information should be included:

  • Name of the nominee
  • Contact information for the nominee
  • Contact information for the individual submitting the nomination
  • An explanation of the justification for the nomination, including how the nominee has made a significant impact in the areas of interest, evidence that the impact has been national or international in scope, and the time period over which the nominee has been actively engaged in the work.

Materials may be submitted in hard or electronic copy and should be sent by 1 September 2003 to:
