November 30, Tuesday (Archive available now!)
3 – 4 p.m. Eastern, Mars Polar Lander Mission Overview
Briefing
December 1, Wednesday (Archives available now!)
12-12:45 p.m. Eastern, Background briefing, “Mars the
Planet” (introduction to Mars)
1-2 p.m. Eastern, Science overview news briefing.
3 – 4 p.m.: Background briefing, “The Search for Water,
the Search for Life”
December 2, Thursday
1-2 p.m. Eastern, News briefing on landing site, including
recent observations from instruments on the currently
orbiting Mars Global Surveyor.
3-4 p.m. Eastern, News briefing. This will report on the
activation of the command sequence on the spacecraft that
will control all entry, descent and landing activities (This
activation will have taken place very early Thursday
morning).
December 3, Friday
2 p.m..-5 p.m. Eastern, Commentated TV feed to include:
3:15 p.m.: Landing (Earth-received time)
3:39 p.m.: First opportunity for signal from lander
5 p.m.- 6 p.m. Eastern, News briefing with first results
from landing
December 6 – 10 to be posted as available

ages, and the general community interested in space exploration.

WHY: The Mars Polar Lander (MPL) is currently on route to Mars and is
scheduled to land near the southern pole on December 3, 1999. The Apple
Learning Interchange, working directly with NASA will webcast NASA live
video feeds directly to your home and classroom. Stay tuned for a
detailed schedule of ALI TV events around this historic visit to planet
Mars.

The Mars Polar Lander (MPL) launched in January and will land on the red
planet on December 3, 1999. The goal is to study the planet’s geology,
climate, and water to find out how Mars evolved, to learn about
relationships to Earth’s climate changes, and to look at resources for
future human exploration– ultimately to study the potential for life
elsewhere in the universe.
The Apple Learning Interchange is pleased to present a special feature
section dedicated to the Mars Polar Lander Mission. We have several
exciting resources for elementary, secondary and higher education faculty:
1.) ALI site is alive with special QuickTime broadcasts of the MPL
landing and the NASA events surrounding the landing. Tune in early to
test your QTV setup.
2.) We are featuring a section of pages dedicated to bringing this
current event into both K-12 and Higher Education classrooms. These pages
are filled with news & events, lesson plans, forums, projects, video
clips, and web reference materials to make educators virtual exploration
of Mars exciting.
3) We have created a special forum area for K12 and Higher Education
faculty as well as students to discuss and collaborate on issues
surrounding the event, space education in general and other topics.
