AGU statement on IPCC Working Group II report

The following statement is attributable to AGU President Susan Lozier and AGU CEO Randy W. Fiser:

“On behalf of our 130,000 enthusiasts to experts worldwide in Earth and space sciences, AGU commends the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II (WGII) on its Sixth Assessment Report, AR6 Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability. The WGII AR6 report’s focus on climate impacts in different regions around the world and on cross-sectoral topics, such as water, oceans, food, cities, and vulnerable populations, is critical for providing policymakers with the data and information they need to make decisions about climate change adaptation and mitigation.

“The report reaffirms that climate change is stressing nearly every region of the world, and every sector of the economy. It demonstrates how climate change continues to exacerbate pre-existing inequalities within certain populations, regions, and communities, including cities which face increasing vulnerability with population growth. AGU and its members will continue to partner with communities and other stakeholders worldwide to understand and address these impacts, including through the new Community Science Exchange, a new platform for advancing the practice and sharing the results of community science.

“The report further guides scientists, engineers, policymakers, communities, businesses, and the public to create climate policies that rely on innovative and responsive science and engineering to identify and weigh immediate response options.

“AGU thanks the dedicated group of authors, many of whom are part of AGU’s community of scientists, for their tireless work on the report over the last two years. We are pleased to note that the science of AGU journals continues to be heavily cited in these critical assessment reports and we thank the authors, editors, and reviewers who continue to bring the best available information to bear.

“AGU is committed to being a catalyst for actionable scientific solutions and looks forward to leveraging this and future IPCC reports to drive concrete action. As scientists and as a society, we must continue to work together to ensure a sustainable future for all.”
