AECOM (ACM), the world’s #1-ranked engineering design firm, announced today that one of AECOM’s projects, the Halley VI Antarctic Research Station, received the 2015 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as part of the society’s Outstanding Projects and Leaders program at an awards dinner in Arlington, Va.

The OCEA award was established in 1960 to honor the project that best illustrates superior civil engineering skills and represents a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and society. Honoring an overall project, rather than an individual, the award recognizes the contributions of many engineers.

The Halley VI Antarctic Research Station, located on the Brunt Ice Shelf, Antarctica, is one of the most challenging and technically complex buildings ever delivered, in the harshest climate on Earth. AECOM produced a compelling concept design for a sustainable research station that offered ease of delivery, construction, operation and decommissioning. It is the world’s first fully re-locatable Antarctic base. Built on an ice shelf that moves over 1,300 feet per year, the station can be relocated inland as the ice shelf moves out to sea.

The project team also included Hugh Broughton Architects and Galliford Try International, the main contractor.
