10 Years of Exploration with Chandra X-Ray Observatory

What: NASA is preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of “first light” for the Chandra X-ray Observatory — its first use to capture astronomical imagery on Aug. 19, 1999. On Aug. 12, key Chandra project leaders and researchers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will gather at the National Space Science & Technology Center in Huntsville to discuss the observatory’s science accomplishments and program status.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory is celebrating 10 years of exploring the invisible universe. Chandra enables scientist from around the world to obtain unprecedented X-ray images of exotic environments to help understand the evolution of the cosmos. The observatory not only helps to probe these mysteries, but also serves as a unique tool to study detailed physics in a laboratory that cannot be replicated on Earth.
