SUMMARY:Planetary Data Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop introduces participants to working with planetary image data using several software tools\, including JMARS\, ArcGIS™ Pro\, ISIS3\, and structure-from-motion photogrammetry. It will also have a unit on planetary data management in the digital age. This workshop focuses on tasks and software features most relevant to planetary science research\, such as mapping and image analysis.\nIt is intended for participants with little or no prior experience with these software or\, for those with experience in ArcMap\, wish to make the switch to ArcGIS Pro. \nThe Workshop will be held in the Bateman Physical Sciences Center H-Wing\, on the Arizona State University Tempe campus. There is no fee to attend this workshop\, but participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements to ASU\, lodging\, and daily expenses. We are offering two\, $2000 travel grants for individuals from underrepresented groups to participate in the workshop. \nMost of the workshop consists of hands-on exercises\, with some lectures and demonstrations\, with tips on where to find imagery and data\, and image analysis in JMARS and ArcGIS Pro\, and basic image processing using ISIS3. We have space for ~30 participants who will use PC desktop computers with ArcGIS site licenses. \nThis workshop is offered through the Planetary Data Training Workshops program\, which is funded by NASA’s Topical Workshops\, Symposia\, and Conferences (TWSC).

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/exep/events/457/register/\nAugust 8-10\, 2023 Time TBA\nRemote participation is available\nChairs: Brendan Crill (NASA/JPL) and Laura Coyle (Ball Aerospace) \nNASA has begun planning for an ambitious program to develop the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) – the first in a panchromatic suite of Great Observatories recommended by the Astro2020 Decadal Survey. The high-level science goals of the mission are to directly image ~25 potentially Earth-like planets and spectroscopically characterize them for signs of life\, as well as enable transformative general astrophysics. The starlight suppression capability of HWO will require significant performance advances both in coronagraphy and telescope stability. \nTo establish a common foundation in starlight suppression and ultra-stable telescope technologies\, NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program is holding this hybrid workshop\, August 8-10\, 2023. \nThe goals of this free hybrid (in-person/remote) workshop are to: \nDiscuss current best understanding of required starlight suppression performance levels\nPresent the best performances to-date of key technologies and approaches (lab demonstrations\, modeling\, hardware) \nDiscuss the suppression/stability trade space for the observatory and the coronagraph (note: this will not include performing trades\, only mapping out the space). \nDiscuss remaining technical gaps and potential future efforts for maturation/risk reduction\nProvide a foundation for those interested in contributing to the Habitable Worlds Observatory

SUMMARY:Microsatellites and their use in Planetary and Astrobiology Research Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the workshop Microsatellites and their use in planetary and astrobiology research (Tartu\, Estonia\, 01 to 08 August 2023) will be to enable students and early career scientists to design micro-and nanosatellite missions tackling scientific themes and target objects they have chosen themselves previously. The workshop will consist of three parts: \n– a lectured part consisting of in-depth talks on the scientific background of the chosen mission themes and on important issues in satellite technology\n– a mission designing part where attendees plan these endeavours in detail with the help of satellite technologists\n– a final presentation of all the projects \nIn order to plan missions involving such small satellites successfully\, intensive interaction and cooperation between scientists and space technologists are necessary\, which is still lacking in some potential key applications.The workshop school aims to: \n– Highlight the possible potential of microsatellites in exploring different targets like the Moon\, small bodies and outer satellites\n– Foster the interaction between space researchers and technologists\n– Allow participants to start the design and planning of new space missions\n– Contribute to the training of a new generation of space researchers \nThe work on the mission designs will continue after the workshop\, thus ensuring a long-term impact. \nThe European Astrobiology Institute\, Univeristy of Tartu and Stockholm University Astrobiology Centre will function as co-organisers of the workshop.

Tickets can be obtained at the following link: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/beyondearthinstitute/961440 \nFor the author Robert Heinlein\, the Moon “is a Harsh Mistress”– but for growing portions of the global space community\, it is increasingly the focus of bold commercial\, scientific\, and geopolitical aspirations. \nRenewed lunar ambitions have spurred major national efforts of human exploration\, such as NASA’s Artemis Program and China’s International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) initiative\, and the creation of the United States’ first-ever “National Cislunar Science & Technology Strategy.” Frameworks for lunar governance are actively being established\, with the American-led “Artemis Accords” collecting 27 signatories to-date – most recently and notably\, India – and the Chinese-established “Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization” attracting the likes of Pakistan\, Russia\, and the UAE. Meanwhile\, a host of companies and entrepreneurs are pursuing business plans and real hardware for cislunar and lunar commerce\, and are partnering with civil organizations for a joint public-private return to the Moon. \nThis flurry of activity\, however\, has also raised questions about how the global community goes about “making tomorrow’s Moon.” Competing international initiatives will need to develop methods to deconflict activities to ensure sustainability on the surface. The harsh lunar environment will need novel technologies and techniques to ensure human health and safety. The prospect of business prospecting 230\,000+ miles away will need creative commercial\, contractual\, and financial approaches to ensure the development of a genuine market. \nWhat trends do we see across the technical\, legal\, policy\, and financial aspects of lunar development? How might Artemis and ILRS influence and interact with commerce and research on the Moon’s surface? The field is entering a revolution in our understanding of exoplanet atmospheres thanks to measurements from the ground\, from space\, and particularly from the new JWST – the superlative facility for exoplanet studies. In the longer term\, such observations will also be essential for seeking signs of biosignature gasses in nearby exoplanets using future\, next-generation observatories. \nThis year’s workshop will cover theoretical modeling\, interpretation\, and observations of exoplanets using a variety of telescopes\, techniques\, and hands-on exercises\, presented by leading experts in the field. \nWe currently plan to hold the 2023 workshop as a hybrid with both in-person and on-line attendance. It is unclear at this time (December 2022) what\, if any\, restrictions will be in place due to COVID. This page will be updated with more information in the coming months and we expect registration will open in February 2023. \nThe Sagan Summer Workshops are aimed at advanced undergraduates\, grad students\, and postdocs\, however all are welcome to attend. SUMMARY:Science with the Habitable Worlds Observatory and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The Astro2020 “Pathways to Discovery” report envisions an ambitious\, multi-decadal fleet of cooperating New Great Observatories\, beginning with the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). HabWorlds aims to search for planets like the Earth around Sun-like stars\, and to revolutionize other areas of astrophysics with its deep imaging and highly multiplexed spectroscopy. NASA is now embarking on the scientific and technical maturation program that will build a new paradigm for flagship mission development. \nOur conference will bring together scientists\, technologists\, and other stakeholders to discuss the most compelling science drivers for HWO\, identity new science areas\, and to work toward a feasible development path. We will also discuss how the recommended X-ray and far-IR flagships complement these science aims and how their concepts might be advanced in the coming decade while HWO is under active development. The conference will include invited talks\, contributed talks\, and posters on all areas of science and technology. We will round out the week with an evening reception in DC to celebrate the first year of JWST science and look ahead to the future (Thursday July 13)\, and a focused “tech day” for deep dives into technology development plans on Friday\, July 14. We support both in-person and virtual participation.
