SUMMARY:Space Education Summit
DESCRIPTION:This summit is dedicated to the Overview Effect & hosted by the Human Space Program. \nHosted by the Human Space Program\, the summit focuses on helping more people experience the Overview Effect\, benefit from it here on Earth\, and become engaged in preparing for humanity’s rapidly approaching multi-planet future. \nThe Overview Effect is a shift in worldview reported by people during spaceflight. It refers to the experience of seeing firsthand the reality that the Earth is in space\, a tiny\, fragile ball of life\, “hanging in the void\,” shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere. The experience often transforms a space traveler’s perspective on the planet and on humanity’s place in the universe. Some common aspects of it are a feeling of awe\, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life\, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment. \nThe Human Space Program is dedicated to creating space exploration as a central project for humanity – one that will result in ethical\, inclusive\, and sustainable expansion into the solar ecosystem.

SUMMARY:EAI Seminar: Life in the Atmosphere and its Implications for Astrobiology
DESCRIPTION:The Earth’s atmosphere and airborne microorganisms are interlinked in many ways. The atmosphere serves as a major conductor for the dispersal of microbial cells\, which has been key for the early colonisation of continents and for the contemporary distribution of microorganisms. Microorganisms can survive stressful conditions in the atmosphere and may be able to maintain active metabolisms while airborne\, which expands our understanding of the limits of life. Finally\, microorganisms have key impacts on atmospheric processes\, in particular the formation\, optical properties and lifetime of clouds\, by which they may impact the global climate. In this lecture\, I will give insights into the ability of microorganisms to enter the atmosphere\, survive and maintain their metabolic activity as well as impact atmospheric processes. These insights are based on field studies that we have performed in polar regions and on laboratory simulation studies\, where we investigate microbial responses to simulated atmospheric conditions. These findings have implications for defining the limits of life as well as for the search for life on exoplanets.

SUMMARY:“Making It” in Space: The Market Potential for Commercial Space Stations – and its Long-Term Implications
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 23\, 2023\, 1:00pm – 2:30pm EST \nThe Beyond Earth Institute (Beyond Earth) will be hosting a virtual policy event titled “‘Making It’ in Space: The Market Potential for Commercial Space Stations – and its Long-Term Implications” on March 23\, 2023 from 1:00-2:00 pm Eastern Time via Zoom. The event is free with donations suggested. Tickets can be obtained at the following link: https://buytickets.at/beyondearthinstitute/869871 \nWhat does the future hold for us “making it” – literally – in outer space? The emergence of an in-space economy and marketplace\, enabled by platforms such as space stations\, has long been envisioned\, studied\, debated\, and discussed. From reports on the potential utilization of the then-proposed Space Station Freedom\, to recent market analysis of privately owned and operated stations\, the space community and industries beyond have considered many possibilities for profitable in-space applications. \nA “killer app” remains to be found\, and questions have lingered about the use\, to-date\, of the International Space Station as a market catalyst. But\, with cargo\, crew\, and now private astronaut missions routinely flying to station\, an exciting new era of robust space utilization is upon us. \nAnd\, as NASA looks toward a future where it is just one of many users of private stations\, a vibrant new ecosystem of commercial in-space habitats is developing. The owners\, operators\, and users of these stations are placing their bets that a range of in-space applications – from tourism and pharmaceuticals\, to manufacturing and materials science\, and beyond – will create the marketplace needed for a sustainable future in orbit. \nJoin the Beyond Earth Institute and expert guests – including representatives of different possible market segments for in-space habitats – on Thursday\, March 23\, from 1 – 2:30 pm (ET) for a lively discussion on the near- and long-term market potential for commercial space stations. What might the economic growth curve look like for commercial stations? What applications are most likely to create the first profits for habitat operators and users? Which might be the most sustainable? How could international interest factor into a station-derived economy\, both in the near future and further out? And\, importantly\, how will the emergent markets enabled by commercial space stations play into the future of humanity’s life and work in the solar system? \nSpeakers: \nModerator: Courtney Stadd\, VP Ecosystem Engagement\, Beyond Earth Institute\nPhil McAlister\, Director of Commercial Spaceflight Division\, NASA Headquarters\nOlivia Gamez Holzhaus\, Founder and CEO\, Rhodium Scientific\nTom Shelley\, President\, Space Adventures

SUMMARY:NASA Open Science Analysis Working Group Symposium
DESCRIPTION:What is the AWG Symposium? \nTo explore deeper into space\, it is crucial that we learn how our bodies change and adapt to the unique environment of space. The Open Science Data Repository (a combination of GeneLab and Ames Life Sciences Data Archive – ALSDA – datasets) helps scientists understand how the fundamental building blocks of life itself change from exposure to microgravity\, radiation\, and other aspects of the space environment. The purpose of the Open Science Analysis Working Groups (AWGs) is to optimize the processing of raw omics data from the Open Science Data Repository to maximize the gain of new knowledge from such complex datasets. The AWG’s are comprised of scientists with diverse backgrounds and is subdivided into six main areas of expertise (Plant\, Animal\, Microbes\, Multi-omics\, ALSDA\, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning – AI/ML). The AWG members focus on establishing consensus pipelines\, discuss processed data and analyze GeneLab data that enables new discoveries. \nOccurring on March 16\, 2023 from 10 am – 2:30 pm PT\, this free virtual event is open to the public and will allow attendees an opportunity to hear about some of the exciting open science stemming from the AWG community. The symposium will feature a keynote address from Eliah Overbey at Weill Cornell Medicine\, and scientific presentations from AWG members that have expertise in data science\, plant biology\, systems biology\, microbiology\, and space medicine. If you are intrigued by the science occurring in the AWGs\, then we would love for you to join! Learn more about how to join the AWGs during the event.

SUMMARY:The Beyond Earth Institute: Paving the “Rules of the Road” toward Space Migration
DESCRIPTION:The Beyond Earth Institute (Beyond Earth) will be hosting a virtual policy event titled “Paving the ‘Rules of the Road’ toward Space Migration” on February 16\, 2023 from 1:00-2:15 pm Eastern Time via Zoom. The event is free with donations suggested. Tickets can be obtained at the following link: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/beyondearthinstitute/837587 \nThe upcoming chapter of the 21st Century “Space Age” will be transformative for the future of the United States – and humanity. With it\, a new of thinking about developing\, as well as living in\, space is emerging. The commercialization and democratization of space is leading focus away from exclusively government-led “aspirational” programs in favor of “practical\, tangible\, equitable” projects driven and fueled by the private sector. Recognizing this shift\, the Beyond Earth Institute believes that the U.S. Government should frame its audacious goal of returning to the Moon and establishing a permanent human presence not as the narrow technocratic goals of a federal bureaucracy – but as part of America’s historic commitment to pioneering and settling new frontiers. \nTo that end\, the Beyond Earth Institute has produced a report\, “Emerging Space Industrial Ecosystem Leading to Eventual Beyond Earth Migration\,” that recommends a shift in the fundamental role of government in space. Rather than being the “leader” of the private sector\, dictating development\, operation\, and ownership of space activities\, the government should be the “lead stimulator” of such activities. It should “set the rules of the road\,” rather than “owning it” – by promoting and encouraging off-planet expansion\, providing security\, and\, most importantly\, being a customer\, not a competitor\, for off-planet goods and services. \nJoin the Beyond Earth Institute’s Courtney Stadd and Robert Brumley\, both prominent long-term advocates of effective commercial space policy and the co-authors of the report\, for a conversation with other thought leaders on the report’s observations\, findings\, and recommendations – and a discussion on the implications of the emerging space industrial base on humanity’s eventual migration Beyond Earth. Brumley will share his latest thinking on how we can begin the process of converting policy to programs.\nSpeakers: \nModerator: Steve Wolfe\, President\, Beyond Earth Institute \n– Courtney Stadd\, Ecosystem Engagement\, VP\, Beyond Earth Institute\n– John Neal\, Executive Director\, Space Policy. U.S. Chamber of Commerce\n– Bob Brumley\, Advisor\, Beyond Earth Institute

SUMMARY:China and Strategic Instability in Space
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, U.S.-China competition has intensified in outer space. U.S.-China competition above the Earth echoes many of the same tensions we see down here but carries unique risks. Nuclear entanglement\, direct-ascent anti-satellite testing and the deployment of large and very large satellite constellations are among the most urgent drivers of instability. Amid the current strains in the overall U.S.-China relationship\, coordinating action on these issues will be far from easy to achieve. Nevertheless\, there is a path forward that can lead us toward a more stable and peaceful space environment. \nJoin USIP for a discussion on strategic competition between the United States and China in space. The conversation will feature the lead author of a forthcoming USIP report on the topic\, as well as space scholars and experts from the U.S. government\, as they explore how to best tackle these complex challenges. \nTake part in the conversation on Twitter using #USChinaSpace. \nSpeakers \nBruce MacDonald – Adjunct Professor\, School of Advanced International Studies\, Johns Hopkins University; Lead Author\, “China and Strategic Instability in Space: Pathways to Peace in an Era of U.S.-China Strategic Competition” \nCarla Freeman – Senior Expert\, U.S. Institute of Peace; Report Author\, “China and Strategic Instability in Space: Pathways to Peace in an Era of U.S.-China Strategic Competition” \nBhavya Lal – Associate Administrator for Technology\, Policy\, and Strategy\, NASA \nVictoria Samson – Washington Office Director\, Secure World Foundation \nScott Pace\, moderator – Director\, Space Policy Institute\, George Washington University
