HWO was prioritized by the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey and is slated to be the NASA Astrophysics flagship mission that will follow the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. HWO will directly image and characterize exoplanets and conduct a wide range of groundbreaking astrophysics observations in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared wavelength range. \nA Dear Colleague Letter and detailed Terms of Reference were released on April 11\, 2023\, to solicit self-nominations for people to serve on the START. SUMMARY:Oxygen in Planetary Biospheres Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Earth\, the only planet we know of with life (and with scientists who hold workshops to discuss planets and life) is thoroughly and anomalously oxidized – in its atmosphere\, mineralogy and biosphere. Clearly\, photosynthetically-released oxygen\, fueled by a nearby star\, is sufficient to support a robust and diverse biosphere. But is it necessary? If so\, is it a “hard step” towards single-and multi-celled eukaryotes (animals and plants)\, or their extraterrestrial analogs (“complex life”)\, including cognitive and technological life? Oxygen is commonly discussed as a biosignature. The rise of oxygen\, as both an energetic “fuel” and the source of an ozone UV screen\, is seen as key to Earth’s development of complex life. Yet Earth’s biosphere predates its contemporary atmospheric composition\, and given astrobiology’s “N=1” problem\, do we know enough to generalize this requirement? Should Earth’s history\, which is marked by a geologically sudden rise of metabolically important atmospheric oxygen\, be mirrored elsewhere? Are there astrophysical contexts and locations which favor the development of oxygenated planetary biospheres? \nThis 3-day workshop at the Green Bank Observatory will focus on topics related to the role of oxygen in the universe\, planets and life\, and how the rise of oxygen on Earth may (or may not) likely have analogs on other planets. Attendance is limited to 50 participants\, by application only\, and all registration and travel expenses will be covered. \nRecognizing the challenges the pandemic has presented for networking over the past several years\, this workshop will have a strong focus on early career researchers\, and will have broad international participation. Presenters are encouraged to gear their talks to an interdisciplinary audience\, eschewing the trees of internecine disciplinary debates for the forest of broader understanding. \nTopics covered may include: \n– Oxygenation events in planetary histories.\n– The origin of oxygenic photosynthesis.\n– Planetary oxygenation and the development of biological complexity.\n– Alternatives to oxygen: complex life and atmospheric radiation screens on abiotic planets?\n– Oxygen as a biosignature.\n– False positives.\n– How do biosignatures change with atmospheric redox state?.\n– Exoplanet modeling and observations.\n– Atmospheric evolution.\n– The astrophysical and astrochemical context for biological origin and evolution. \nThis list is not intended to be comprehensive or definitive; we encourage those working on any related problems not listed here to apply.

SUMMARY:4th International Planetary Caves Conference
DESCRIPTION:Purpose and Scope \nDuring the last decade\, caves and subterranean features have been discovered on nearly every planetary surface as the spatial resolution of spacecraft instrumentation has markedly improved. Planetary scientists have identified more than 270 lunar and several hundred martian cave-like features. These features allow us to access and examine the subsurface without costly deep-drilling payloads. Moreover\, caves provide potential habitats for life\, including future human habitation on the Moon and Mars. \nCave-like features on planetary bodies formed from volcanic processes\, tectonic processes\, and/or karst dissolution. Together\, these features represent significant void space in the subsurface. Pit crater chains\, lateral cave entrances\, and skylight entrances represent potential access to the deep subsurface\, enabling us to address key questions about subsurface habitability and biosignature potential. These caves may also host significant water ice deposits for human consumption and potentially generate hydrogen fuel to return humans to Earth. \nThe 4th International Planetary Caves Conference plans to continue capitalizing on advances in the current state-of-the-art cave exploration and exchanging knowledge and ideas between scientists and engineers for future cave missions. Topics include: \n– Genesis and significance of cave-like features across the solar system planetary bodies\n– Mars subsurface exploration and science potential through cave entrances\n– Lunar subsurface exploration and science potential through cave entrances\n– The possibility to search for subterranean volatiles and determine subsurface habitability\n– Space mission concepts\, remote sensing\, robotic access\, and exploration\n– The astrobiology potential of planetary subsurface environments\n– Technologies and architectures required for human exploration and habitation \nAdditionally\, the conference will provide a forum to discuss ongoing mission proposals to space agencies and the longer-term objective of developing a strategy for research and robotic exploration of caves across the solar system.

NASA has a substantial archive of experimental data on the harmful physiological impacts of spaceflight\, from “space anemia\,” to disruption of vision\, to the weaking of bones from prolonged microgravity exposure. But\, by its own admission\, the agency has a long way to go to fully understand the scope of spaceflight’s health effects – and\, as important\, how to meaningfully mitigate the worst of them. \nWhile the United States actively drives forward toward a crewed return to the Moon and is envisioning a sustained long-duration human presence on the lunar surface\, its Human Research Program – responsible for investigating\, and dealing with\, risks to human health in space – manages by on a tightly constrained budget. And although there are engineering solutions to human spaceflight health challenges\, such as artificial gravity\, they have not been widely embraced in our current exploration architecture. \nIf humans are not only to survive in space but thrive in space – as explorers in the depths of the solar system\, and as citizens beyond Earth – it is critical that steps be taken to better understand the impact of the space domain on the human body. SUMMARY:EAI Seminar: Life in the Atmosphere and its Implications for Astrobiology
DESCRIPTION:The Earth’s atmosphere and airborne microorganisms are interlinked in many ways. The atmosphere serves as a major conductor for the dispersal of microbial cells\, which has been key for the early colonisation of continents and for the contemporary distribution of microorganisms. Microorganisms can survive stressful conditions in the atmosphere and may be able to maintain active metabolisms while airborne\, which expands our understanding of the limits of life. Finally\, microorganisms have key impacts on atmospheric processes\, in particular the formation\, optical properties and lifetime of clouds\, by which they may impact the global climate. In this lecture\, I will give insights into the ability of microorganisms to enter the atmosphere\, survive and maintain their metabolic activity as well as impact atmospheric processes. These insights are based on field studies that we have performed in polar regions and on laboratory simulation studies\, where we investigate microbial responses to simulated atmospheric conditions. These findings have implications for defining the limits of life as well as for the search for life on exoplanets.

DESCRIPTION:NASA and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) will announce during an event at 11 a.m. EDT (10 a.m. CDT) on Monday\, April 3\, from NASA Johnson Space Center’s Ellington Field in Houston\, the four astronauts who will venture around the Moon. Traveling aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft during Artemis II\, the mission is the first crewed flight test on the agency’s path to establishing a long-term scientific and human presence on the lunar surface. \nThe event will air on NASA Television\, the NASA app\, and the agency’s website. \nMedia are invited to attend the event and speak with the astronauts about their assignments. Other experts working on Artemis missions also will be available. Additional opportunities to interview crew remotely will be available on Tuesday\, April 4. \nInternational media wishing to attend must contact NASA no later than 5 p.m. CDT Friday\, March 17. U.S. media must contact NASA no later than 5 p.m. Monday\, March 27.
