SUMMARY:Thriving in Space: Decadal Survey for the Biological and Physical Sciences in Space Public Release
DESCRIPTION:Research in Biological and Physical Sciences in Space (BPS) provides the critical scientific and technological foundations that make space exploration possible. As humanity looks towards the Moon and Mars for future missions\, this work is needed to help astronauts adapt and live in the harsh environments of space. \nThriving in Space\, a new National Academies’ decadal survey\, provides a roadmap for increasing national investment in BPS research\, from experiments to infrastructure to education. The report identifies key scientific questions\, priorities\, and ambitious research campaigns that will enable human space exploration and transform our understanding of how the universe works. \nLearn more about the report by joining us on Tuesday\, September 12\, 2023 from 10:30am-12:00pm ET. During the event\, decadal survey co-chairs Robert Ferl and Krystyn Van Vliet will highlight the key findings and recommendations from the report and take questions from the audience. \nParticipants are invited to attend in person at the Keck building in Washington\, D.C. or online via webcast. \nRegistration is required for in-person attendees\, but is optional for online attendees. You can watch the webcast and submit questions for our speakers on the [event page]. \nFull event details \nWhen: Tuesday\, September 12\, 2023\, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM (UTC-04:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) \nWhere: Attend virtually: \nYou will receive the relevant link(s) to attend virtually via email.\nAttend in person: \nKeck Center\n500 5th St NW\nWashington D.C. 20001

SUMMARY:Towards Starlight Suppression for the Habitable Worlds Observatory Workshop
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/exep/events/457/register/\nAugust 8-10\, 2023 Time TBA\nRemote participation is available\nChairs: Brendan Crill (NASA/JPL) and Laura Coyle (Ball Aerospace) \nNASA has begun planning for an ambitious program to develop the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) – the first in a panchromatic suite of Great Observatories recommended by the Astro2020 Decadal Survey. The high-level science goals of the mission are to directly image ~25 potentially Earth-like planets and spectroscopically characterize them for signs of life\, as well as enable transformative general astrophysics. The starlight suppression capability of HWO will require significant performance advances both in coronagraphy and telescope stability. \nTo establish a common foundation in starlight suppression and ultra-stable telescope technologies\, NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program is holding this hybrid workshop\, August 8-10\, 2023. \nThe goals of this free hybrid (in-person/remote) workshop are to: \nDiscuss current best understanding of required starlight suppression performance levels\nPresent the best performances to-date of key technologies and approaches (lab demonstrations\, modeling\, hardware) \nDiscuss the suppression/stability trade space for the observatory and the coronagraph (note: this will not include performing trades\, only mapping out the space). \nDiscuss remaining technical gaps and potential future efforts for maturation/risk reduction\nProvide a foundation for those interested in contributing to the Habitable Worlds Observatory

SUMMARY:Entrepreneurs Pitch Ideas for Future in NASA ‘Space Tank’
DESCRIPTION:College students in NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Innovation and Technology Tech Transfer Idea Competition (MITTIC) will pitch their projects during a “Space Tank” at Space Center Houston on Friday\, April 28. The competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. EDT\, and the winning team will be announced at 1 p.m. \nInterested media must contact Jonas Dino by calling 650-203-3061 or e-mailing Jonas.Dino@nasa.gov no later than 5 p.m.\, Thursday\, April 26. \nThe competition will be streamed live at: http://exploresch.org/SpaceTankCompetition \nThe Minority University Education Research Project (MUREP) innovation and technology transfer idea competition (MITTIC) invites students\, enrolled at minority serving universities and colleges across the country\, to develop a product or service based on a NASA technology. Teams selected for the competition are invited to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston for an immersion experience that includes tours of NASA facilities\, sessions with subject matter experts to refine their business pitch\, and networking opportunities with NASA and industry experts. \nTeams selected for the competition are from the following schools: \nLone Star College System in Texas\nFayetteville State University in North Carolina\nUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake in Texas\nSanta Monica College in California\nUniversity of Massachusetts-Boston\nHartnell College in California\nUniversity of Texas at Austin \nEach of the seven teams will have 20 minutes to pitch and defend its business concept to a panel of NASA and industry subject matter experts. The winning team will be invited to join Team Piezo Pace from the University of St. Thomas\, Houston\, in a visit to NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley\, California\, for additional look in the innovation and entrepreneurial space. \nProducts such as cell phone cameras\, cordless tools\, and memory foam have NASA histories and a NASA student tech transfer competition aims to continue the evolution from a NASA technology to a product to benefit humanity. \nAccording to NASA’s recent economic impact study\, the agency generated more than $72 billion in economic activity. Competitions like MITTIC help stimulate future economic activity by engaging the entrepreneurial spirit of the Artemis Generation. \nLearn more information about the MITTIC program at: https://microgravityuniversity.jsc.nasa.gov/nasamittic
