SUMMARY:Brines Across the Solar System: Ancient and Future Brines
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location and Dates \nWe are happy to announce the final conference of the LPI’s Brines Across the Solar System series. The Ancient and Future Brines conference is scheduled for May 15–18\, 2023\, in Reno\, Nevada. The conference format will be hybrid with in-person and virtual attendance opportunities and an optional field trip on May 19. \nThis is the final conference of the Brines Across the Solar System series. \nSeries Purpose and Scope \nlogA Salty aqueous solutions (i.e.\, brines) are prominent across diverse planetary bodies. They are observed in the gas plumes presently erupting from Enceladus\, reconstructed from precipitates on the surface of Ceres and Mars\, and inferred from meteoritic samples. Understanding the mechanisms that led to the formation and preservation of these brine systems provides vital clues to their role in geological\, geophysical\, environmental\, and biological processes. In this conference series\, we will address questions relating to the thermodynamics and physiochemistry of brines\, as well as their occurrence today and throughout time in our solar system and beyond. \nConference Objectives \nThe Brines Across the Solar System: Ancient and Future Brines conference focuses on integrating diverse fields of study\, such as geology\, mineralogy\, (astro)biology\, chemistry\, planetary science\, physics\, technology\, and engineering. The emphasis for this conference will be the intersections of these fields as they apply to understanding: \n– The formation\, location\, and potential habitability of ancient brines on early planetary bodies\n– The role of ancient brines in the origins of life and habitable environments\n– The technology involved in the detection and characterization of brines on planetary bodies (both in situ and in returned samples)\n– The technology involved in mitigating brines in the detection and characterization of biosignatures\n– The role and impact of brine systems for In Situ Resource Utilization

SUMMARY:4th International Planetary Caves Conference
DESCRIPTION:Purpose and Scope \nDuring the last decade\, caves and subterranean features have been discovered on nearly every planetary surface as the spatial resolution of spacecraft instrumentation has markedly improved. Planetary scientists have identified more than 270 lunar and several hundred martian cave-like features. These features allow us to access and examine the subsurface without costly deep-drilling payloads. Moreover\, caves provide potential habitats for life\, including future human habitation on the Moon and Mars. \nCave-like features on planetary bodies formed from volcanic processes\, tectonic processes\, and/or karst dissolution. Together\, these features represent significant void space in the subsurface. Pit crater chains\, lateral cave entrances\, and skylight entrances represent potential access to the deep subsurface\, enabling us to address key questions about subsurface habitability and biosignature potential. These caves may also host significant water ice deposits for human consumption and potentially generate hydrogen fuel to return humans to Earth. \nThe 4th International Planetary Caves Conference plans to continue capitalizing on advances in the current state-of-the-art cave exploration and exchanging knowledge and ideas between scientists and engineers for future cave missions. Topics include: \n– Genesis and significance of cave-like features across the solar system planetary bodies\n– Mars subsurface exploration and science potential through cave entrances\n– Lunar subsurface exploration and science potential through cave entrances\n– The possibility to search for subterranean volatiles and determine subsurface habitability\n– Space mission concepts\, remote sensing\, robotic access\, and exploration\n– The astrobiology potential of planetary subsurface environments\n– Technologies and architectures required for human exploration and habitation \nAdditionally\, the conference will provide a forum to discuss ongoing mission proposals to space agencies and the longer-term objective of developing a strategy for research and robotic exploration of caves across the solar system.

SUMMARY:2023 Technology Showcase for Future NASA Planetary Science Missions
DESCRIPTION:NASA’s Science Mission Directorate encourages the use of innovative new technologies to dramatically increase science returns on future missions and so is sponsoring this Technology Showcase – focused this year on planetary science – to foster discussions about new technologies that may substantially improve future missions that have been identified by the science community. \nThe showcase’s science organizing committee has solicited abstracts from the planetary science community describing missions that are expected to be proposed to future planetary science solicitations including New Frontiers\, Discovery\, or SIMPLEx Announcement of Opportunities\, or directed Flagship and medium-class concepts identified by the National Academy of Sciences’ “Origins\, Worlds\, and Life: A Decadal Strategy for Planetary Science and Astrobiology 2023–2032.” \nTechnology developers who may have relevant technology for those missions are invited to apply to showcase those technologies. Scientists\, mission managers\, and other interested parties are also invited to attend. \nTechnology developers who think that they have relevant technology will be asked to describe the relevance to one or more abstracts before being invited to showcase those technologies. Those selected technologies will be given a space at the event to allow for any material that might explain the technology and its benefits to that specific mission concept. The Showcase will be structured to foster direct discussions between technologists and scientists and mission managers about the technologies’ potential application to specific future missions. \nScientists who have not yet submitted mission concept abstracts are invited to do so by contacting the relevant planetary science assessment group (OPAG\, SBAG\, MEPAG\, VEXAG\, LEAG\, MEXAG). \nSpace is limited so all interested parties are asked to indicate interest. Invitations will be issued with the following priority: Technology developers with technology relevant to one or more science abstract posted here; scientists and mission/formulation managers with an interest in the missions described by those abstracts; other interested parties. \nThis Showcase will take place from January 9-11 2023 in Galveston\, TX.
