TRAVEL GRANTS FOR DPS 2002 MEETING
A small number of travel grants for eligible students, post-graduate

fellows, or scientists without other means of support are expected to

be available through the generosity of Dr. William K. Hartmann, plus

some additional support from DPS funds.  Grants will consist of partial

travel expenses (we anticipate about $250), plus a waiver of registra-

tion fees.  The application package should be no longer than 3 pages,

and contain the following:
1.  A COPY (preliminary draft is sufficient) of the abstract of the

paper to be presented.  Both oral and poster papers are eligible. The

abstract MUST also be submitted through the regular submission process

to the AAS.
2.  A letter describing the scientific significance of the research,

and any further justification for attending the meeting (e.g. job

hunting).  For students or post-docs, the letter may be written by the

advisor, or if not, should be concurred (co-signed) by the advisor. In

either case the advisor should confirm the need for travel assistance.
3.  A brief CV including degree status.
For full consideration, the application package should be submitted by

July 29, 2002, to the DPS Chair, Dr. Wesley T. Huntress, Geophysical

Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, 5251 Broad Branch Road

NW , Washington, DC 20015-1305, USA, or the materials can be sent by

e-mail to huntress@gl.ciw.edu.edu. Late applications for travel support

may be considered if funds are available.

2003 PRIZE NOMINATIONS CLOSED, NEW PROCEDURE IN FUTURE
Thank you for your nominations and letters of support for nominees.

There is much work, professional and public, that is deserving of

recognition. It is inspirational reading.
Now that DPS Bylaws allow for the electronic transaction of business by

the DPS Committee, and given that there is now a regular mid-term

meeting of the Committee in Washington DC, the DPS Committee has voted

for future nominations and selection of prizes to occur wholly between

meetings. So, nominations for the 2004 prizes will be declared open at

our 2003 meeting in Monterey (in 14 months), and selections will be

made at a time that will allow prize winners approximately four months

to prepare their prize lectures (when applicable) for the 2004

meeting.

INPUT REQUESTED FOR NASA PLANETARY DATA SYSTEM CAPABILITIES
The NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) curates data from all solar system

missions as well as a growing volume of groundbased and laboratory

data.  Holdings are expected to soon exceed 100 Terabytes (driven by

increasing volumes of data returning from Mars and other missions).
To support online access and use of all PDS holdings by the science

community, NASA is funding the development of a web-based “front end”

to the PDS that is more responsive to scientist needs. The Planetary

Data System Working Group is collecting sample queries/functionalities

to act as a guide for the interface.  
Your input is critical to the success of this effort. 
Samples:
* List all imagery of planetary surfaces from a specific viewing

  angle and solar incidence angle.
* List all available imagery of Halley’s comet when it was between

  2.5 and 3.5 AU from the Sun.
* Display  MAG vectors in a line plot and PLS differential flux data in

  a dynamic spectral plot during the time June 23, 1996 18:00:00 to

  June 23, 1996 21:00:00 from the G1 orbit of Galileo.
