ICARUS NEWS
Please find in the following a joint message from Phil Nicholson,
Editor-in-chief of Icarus, and Karel Nederveen from Elsevier Science.Dear DPS members.
Karel Nederveen is Senior Publishing Editor at Elsevier Science in
Amsterdam, The Netherlands and he is responsible for books and journals
in Geophysics & Planetary Sciences. As of April 1, 2002, his
responsibilities included Icarus. Before joining Elsevier Science
almost 3 years ago, Karel worked for almost 6 years with Kluwer
Academic Publishers in the field of Materials Science & Engineering.
Karel is a physicist by training.Once the responsibility for the journal was transferred to Karel, in
March, he visited with the Editors at Cornell, and met with Mark Sykes
as the representative of the DPS.In these meetings, Elsevier was urgently asked to arrange for
electronic access to all published issues of Icarus for DPS members.
Karel realizes the special importance this carries for the DPS
community and has already submitted a proposal to the DPS, explaining
that Elsevier is prepared to take care of this, and in which way. The
proposed arrangement, if accepted by the DPS, would be effective as of
January 2003.Furthermore, Elsevier has been working on including Icarus in its
generic author and reader services. In this respect, please note a few
of the accomplishments:* Inclusion of Icarus in ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com)
* Establishment of a so-called Front Page for Icarus
(http://www.elsevier.com/inca/publications/store/6/2/2/8/4/3/index.htt)
* Inclusion in Elsevier’s Author Gateway
(http://authors.elsevier.com/JournalDetail.html?PubID=622843&Precis=)We had a good discussion on the “environment” in which Icarus as a
journal functions, and we have confidence that the Editors and Elsevier
will cooperate fruitfully in order to achieve our joint goals: publish
high quality papers and ensure the widest possible exposure of these
papers. We look forward to continue working with you in the future, and seeing
your research papers submitted to Icarus! Please feel free to give us your comments.

CHILD CARE SERVICES AT THE 2002 DPS MEETING
The LOC for the fall DPS meeting has graciously agreed to help arrange
and coodinate child care services for those who might desire it during
the meeting. If you anticipate a need for such services, please
complete the following and return it to Amy Simon-Miller, who will be
working with the LOC to arrange the service. After the arrangements
are complete, a notice will be sent in the DPS enews, and a link put on
the meeting web page, containing information about how to access the
service. We also welcome your comments about how to provide the most
effective service at this and future meetings.
