ISS On-Orbit Status 29 Jul 2002
All ISS systems continue to function nominally, except as noted previously. Begin of Week 8 for Expedition Five.
Before breakfast, all ISS crewmembers completed the periodic Russian medical experiment protocols of calf volume measurement (PZhE-MO-7) and body mass measurement (PZhE-MO-8). FE-2 Treschev then closed out the experiments and stowed the MO-8 equipment.
Sergei Treschev worked on the Plasma Crystal-3 technical experiment, turning on the evacuation turbopump.. Later in the day he loaded a software update for the payload and conferred with a ground specialist. The turbopump will be deactivated tonight before dinner.
CDR Valery Korzun performed the periodic inspection of the Service Module shell behind panels 130, 134, 135, 138, and the TVIS treadmill.
This week, the crew is scheduled for another water collection session, this time taking six samples total from the SRV-K hot and warm ports — two for microbiological in-flight analysis, two for in-flight analysis with the TOCA (Total Organic Carbon Analyzer,- a water quality monitoring instrument for determining concentrations of total organic carbon, total inorganic carbon, total carbon, pH value and conductivity in water), and two for chemical archive. Today, Sergei Treschev collected the water samples (a total of the samples per port). Peggy performed the micro in-flight analysis using the backup syringe method with the WMK (water monitoring kit). [Tomorrow, Peggy is scheduled to perform the TOCA analysis of the two TOCA in-flight analysis bags, and on Wednesday she will analyze the MCDs (microbial capture devicesfor their T+2 days reading. T+5 analysis is not required.]
Korzun completed a checkout of a cable connection to a smoke detector (IDZh-2 A4) of the FGB’s fire detection and fire suppression system (SPOPT), from the onboard cable network (BKS) side and between the connector terminals. The smoke detector was first disabled from the ground.
FE-1 Whitson conducted the regular checkup/maintenance of the RED (resistive exercise device) bolts.
CDR Korzun dismantled the "Puma" collimator sighting device from the SM device and stowed the equipment for future use.
After recharging the battery of the Russian DVCAM (digital TV camcorder), the two cosmonauts set up a downlink of previously recorded video of Russian segment (RS) ventilation/air duct arrangement. The actual downlink was activated from the automated daily timeline system (SPP) at a pre-set comm window time.
Despite Valery’s and Peggy’s hard work yesterday, the troubleshooting of the TVIS treadmill problem (anomalously noisy roller) was not successful. [Structures engineers at MCC-H have a good mathematical model of the TVIS structure, especially the roller truss, which was developed last year when the broken slat issue was worked. Photos from the crew and their descriptions are helpful in running scenarios with/without the damaged roller to determine the best course of action. MCC-H is also evaluating a set-screw situation to see how best to prevent their backing out again. More instructions are being prepared for tomorrow.]
FE-1 Whitson ran another periodic functional test of the cardiac defibrillator.
FE-2 Treschev configured the Russian laptop #3 for the upcoming Sprut-K ("squid") experiment, part of Russian medical research on the distribution and behavior of human body fluids in zero gravity.
Regular daily routine tasks were performed by Korzun (SOSh life support system maintenance) and Whitson (Lab payload status checkup and IMS delta file preparation). The CDR also performed the weekly BRPK-2 water condensate separator inspection.
Korzun and Treschev installed a strength trainer on the Velo ergometer (VELO) exercise device. Due to the temporary constraint on TVIS exercises, the cosmonauts’ daily workout regimen is currently prescribed to be one VELO session (1 hour) and one VELO-plus-RED session (1.5 hrs) as required by onboard procedures. Day 3 VELO exercises (of the three-day microcycle) should be based on Day 1 workout aimed at the development of speed endurance.
All crewmembers did their daily (modified) physical exercise.
