DESC: RELEASE DATE: January 18, 2002 NOTICE OF INTENT DUE: February
20, 2002 PROPOSALS DUE: April 24, 2002 The National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Space Science is
releasing an Announcement of Opportunity (AO 02-OSS-01) entitled
Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Related Missions of Opportunity.
SDO is the first Space Weather Research Network mission in
the Living With a Star (LWS) program.
The primary goal of the
SDO mission is to advance our understanding of the solar variations
that influence life on Earth and humanity’s technological systems.
NASA intends to select four to six scientific investigations
that will address how the Sun’s magnetic field is generated
and structured and how conversion and release of this stored
magnetic energy causes changes in solar wind, energetic particles,
and solar irradiance. SDO is currently planned for launch in
2007.
Participation is open to all categories of organizations,
foreign and domestic, including educational institutions, industry,
nonprofit organizations, NASA centers, and other Government
agencies. This solicitation will be open through April 24,
2002. Upon the release date, specific guidance for proposal
preparation will be available via the World Wide Web site:
http://spacescience.NASA.gov .
