Helios altitude flight postponed 24 hours
Engineers working on the solar-powered Helios flying wing on the Hawaiian
island of Kauai decided to postpone their first attempt to fly at 95,000 to
100,000 feet from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, Aug. 12. The
rescheduling was made to accommodate some preflight equipment checks.
Additionally, the delay could enhance the possibilities of Helios reaching
an altitude of 100,000 feet because high cirrus clouds in the area on
Saturday may be gone the following day, permitting more sunlight to charge
the aircraft’s solar cells.
