NOAA and NASA to hold press briefing on upcoming launch of GOES-M weather satellite

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA will hold a press briefing on Thursday, June 21, at 10 a.m. in the Zenger Room at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., to announce the planned launch of a new Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, GOES-M. The launch of GOES-M is scheduled for July 15, 2001. This new satellite will improve weather forecasting and monitor environmental events in the United States on a real time basis.

The GOES-M is an advanced environmental satellite, equipped with a telescope that will be used to forecast geomagnetic storms in space. The satellite will also monitor hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, flash floods and other severe weather.

Participating in this briefing will be:

  • Gary Davis, NOAA’s Satellite Service, moderator

  • Gerry Dittberner, NOAA GOES program manager

  • Martin Davis, NASA GOES project manager

  • Steve Hill, NOAA, Space Environment Center

    Video File Feed: GOES-M B-roll of imagery and other materials will be broadcast during the NASA TV video file feed scheduled for June 21, 2001 at noon, 3:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m. and midnight EDT. The video file will also be broadcast at these same times on the day of the prelaunch press briefing and on the day of the launch. NASA TV is broadcast on GE-2, transponder 9C, C-band, located at 85 degrees West Longitude. The frequency is 3880 MHz. Polarization is vertical and audio is monaural at 6.8 MHz.
