Minutes of Senior Staff and Center Directors’ Meeting – May 7, 2001

The following documents the discussions addressed at the Senior
Staff and Center Directors’ Meeting on May 7, 2001. Action assignments
have been placed in brackets [ ] for easy identification.

1. AA Reports

Z/McCormick: 1) The symposium “Looking Backward, Looking Forward:
Forty Years of Human Spaceflight” will be held on May 8, in cooperation
with the Space Policy Institute, George Washington University. 2) On
May 11, the NASA Alumni League will hold its annual meeting here at NASA
Headquarters.

P/Cleggett: Ms. Cleggett thanked SSC for hosting the Agencywide News and
Operations meeting.

H/Luedtke: 1) Mr. Luedtke thanked Art Stephenson and MSFC for hosting
the Open Forum with Industry on May 3.

K/Green: 1) This week is National Small Business Week. 2) Last week,
the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU)
participated in events in Hampton, VA. and North Carolina.

W/Gross: Russell Rau will be leaving NASA this month. Alan Lamoreaux
will be the Acting Assistant Inspector General for Auditing. Vera
Garrant will assume external relations duties.

I/Schumacher: A brief update was provided on the new NASA Security
Office.

AS/Olsen: 1) The Second Pan Pacific Basin Workshop on Microgravity and
Life Sciences was completed last week in Pasadena, California. 2) In
addition to the scientific workshop, educational and outreach sessions
were held at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California.

Q/Gregory: NASA’s 16th Annual Continual Improvement and Reinvention
Conference will be held this week.

AM/Williams: Dr. Paul Root Wolpe has joined the Office of the Chief
Health and Medical Officer as a bioethicist.

AO/Nelson: The Chief Information Officers held a workshop at ARC on
e-NASA concepts.

J/Sutton: 1) Mr. Sutton thanked Harry McDonald and Tommy Moyles for
representing NASA at the Administration’s meeting last Friday on dealing
with the energy shortages. 2) NASA has won a White House “Closing the
Circle” award for our environmental management system development and
testing.

L/Bingham: The hearing before the Senate Subcommittee on
VA-HUD-Independent Agencies is scheduled for May 9.

C/Christensen: NASA’s Annual Secretarial and Clerical Awards luncheon
will be May 8.

2. Dr. Mulville

The Center Directors’ Telecon scheduled for Thursday, May 10, is
cancelled due to NASA’s 16th Annual Continual Improvement and Reinvention
Conference. The Center Directors’ Telecon will resume on Thursday, May
17.

3. Center Directors

ARC/Berry: ARC has reduced energy consumption and is awaiting more
guidelines from the Administration.

DFRC/Petersen: 1) Endeavor landed at Edwards on Tuesday and is being
prepared for ferry back to KSC. 2) The X-40A had a successful 4th drop
flight on Saturday morning.

GSFC/Diaz: 1) Due to a recent incident where a contractor died in an
isolated area of GSFC, it is requested that employees and contractors
walk with someone so help can be summoned if needed. 2) Joanne Simpson
was awarded the “Charlie Anderson Award for Diversity” from the American
Meteorological Society.

JPL/Elachi: The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Request for Proposals
is out.

JSC/Estess: 1) NASA is on schedule to fly STS-104 on June 14. 2)
Twelve teams have been assembled to test the arm prior to the launch of
STS-104. We are on schedule for STS-105 launch in mid-July.

KSC/Bridges: The Florida legislature will provide an additional $16
million for the SERPLE Facility, bringing the total to $30 million for
KSC.

MSFC/Stephenson: The fourth successful X-40 drop test was conducted last
week.

SSC/Craig: 1) Mr. Craig noted the successful results of last weeks ISO
14001 review. 2) Stennis Space Center (SSC) received the Energy Star
Award from EPA for energy conservation. 3) The Mississippi Technology
Alliance is meeting at SSC this week.

4. Mr. Goldin

1) Mr. Goldin elaborated on the computer problem that occurred recently
on the Space Station.

2) Mr. Goldin emphasized that safety must be ingrained as part of NASA’s
culture.

3) Mr. Goldin stated that he wants creative thinking about how NASA deals
with aging facilities.
