1
Macaulay TR, Peters BT, Wood SJ, Clément GR, Oddsson L, Bloomberg JJ.
Developing proprioceptive countermeasures to mitigate postural and locomotor control deficits after long-duration spaceflight.
Front Syst Neurosci. 2021 Apr 27;15:658985. Review.
PI: J.J. Bloomberg
Note: From the introduction: “The overall purpose of this review is to support the conception and development of countermeasures that address the issue of balance impairments after long-duration spaceflight and are compatible with exploration spaceflight conditions. Rather than describe in detail each of the potential countermeasures that have been proposed, here we elucidate the recent findings that drive current directions.” This article may be obtained online without charge.

Role of shear stress on renal proximal tubular cells for nephrotoxicity assays.
J Toxicol. 2021 Apr 21;2021:6643324. Review.
PI: T.G. Hammond
Note: From the abstract: “This review codifies the techniques used to reintroduce shear stress, the cell lines utilized, and the biological outcomes reported. Further, we propose a set of interventions to enhance future cell biology understanding of nephrotoxicity using cell culture models.” This article may be obtained online without charge.
Journal Impact Factor: Not applicable to this publication
Funding: “This material is the result of work supported with resources and the use of facilities at the Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System and Duke University School of Medicine. This study was also supported by the NASA grant to the Institute for Medical Research (80NSSC19K0706).”

Spaceflight induced disorders: Potential nutritional countermeasures.
Front Bioeng Biotechnol. 2021 Apr 21;9:666683. Review.
Note: ISS results. From the abstract: “This review aims to highlight recent studies describing damages of human body induced by the space environment for microgravity, and radiation. All novel conditions, to ally unknown to the Darwinian selection strategies on Earth, to which we should add the psychological stress that astronauts suffer due to the inevitable forced cohabitation in claustrophobic environments, the deprivation from their affections and the need to adapt to a new lifestyle with molecular changes due to the confinement. In this context, significant nutritional deficiencies with consequent molecular mechanism changes in the cells that induce to the onset of physiological and cognitive impairment have been considered.” This article is part of the Research Topic “Space (Nano)Medicine” (https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/18488/space-nanomedicine#articles). Additional articles will be forthcoming and may be found in the link to the Research Topic. This article may be obtained online without charge.

Impaired attentional processing during parabolic flight.
Front. Physiol. 2021 May 13;12(597).
Note: Parabolic flight results. From abstract: “We observed a deterioration in attentional processing prior to the first parabola that was further aggravated in weightlessness and returned to baseline after the last parabola. Reaction Time, Hit and False Alarm Rate were moderately correlated with self-reported anxiety state, but not cortisol levels or emotional states. The use of scopolamine had minor effects on Reaction Time. Our results confirm previous studies reporting impairments of cognitive performance in 0 g, and highlight important aspects that should be considered for the design of behavioral research experiments in future parabolic flight campaigns.” This article may be obtained online without charge.
