Countermeasures-based improvements in stress, immune system dysregulation and latent herpesvirus reactivation onboard the International Space Station – Relevance for deep space missions and terrestrial medicine.
Neurosci Biobehav Rev. 2020 May 25. [Epub ahead of print] Review.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.
PIs: B.E. Crucian, C.F. Sams, R. Simpson
Note: “This unique article reviews some construction era ISS findings in the areas of immunity and stress, and compares it to newly generated data from the post construction period. Improvements were noted in general immune status, inflammation was reduced, as was the reactivation of several latent herpesviruses. The article ascribes these improvements to several operational countermeasures deployed to ISS post construction, including improved aerobic and resistive exercise, certain nutritional supplements, frequency of resupply and improved behavioral health support. Interestingly, the reactivation of HSV1 has emerged as a ‘new’ concern during ISS missions, indicating that distinct herpesvirus require separate mechanisms for immunological control. The relevant finding is that we can positively influence immunity during spaceflight, which may reduce specific clinical risks. International teams will now work to translate the successful ISS countermeasures to the more constrained deep space vehicles and mission profiles.” — B.E. Crucian.
