Session 1: Benefits of Space Technology and Applications to Socio-Economic Development

Dear IAF Community,

The upcoming Global Conference on Space for Emerging Countries – GLEC 2019 to be held from 24 – 26 April 2019 in Marrakech, Morocco will feature a session on the Benefits of Space Technology and Applications to Socio-Economic Development.

The primary focus of emerging countries in developing national space programs is to leverage the benefits of space technologies and applications products and services. Whereas some countries may have a fair appreciation of what this entails, there are a significant number of emerging countries that have not grasped this important benefit and how this can assist in the socio-economic development of the country.

The Session focus will be on:

  • Recognising the relevance of space technologies and applications to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
  • Valuing how space technologies and applications can assist in the socio-economic development of a country.

The first part of the session will feature a Keynote Address from 11:45 – 12:00 from Driss El Hadani, Director General of Centre Royal de Télédétection Spatial (CRTS) followed by a High-Level Panel Part 1 from 12:00 – 13:00 moderated by Valanathan Munsami, CEO of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) and High-Level Panel Part 2 from 14:30 – 15:30, moderated by Jean-Pascal Le Franc, Director of Planning, International Relations and Quality at Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES),
