NOTE: From abstract: “In summary, p75 is essential for tumor angiogenesis and survival in highly vascularized murine lung tumor xenografts. Blocking p75 expression may lead to tumor regression. This may represent new and effective therapy against lung neoplasms and potentially tumors of other origin.” This article may be obtained online without charge.

Identification of proteins secreted into the medium by human lymphocytes irradiated in vitro with or without adaptive environments.

(PI: K.N. Rithidech)
NOTE: From conclusion: “The data reported here demonstrated that when using a proteomic approach with the LC-MS/MS system, the global expression profiles of secreted proteins strongly supported the induction of AR [adaptive response] by low dose radiation given to human lymphocytes (obtained from freshly drawn blood) before subsequent exposure to high dose radiation. The data also suggested that a specific subset of proteins (with defense mechanisms) was secreted by 0.03-Gy irradiated lymphocytes within 4 h and that such proteins altered cell response to injury induced by succeeding high dose irradiation. These data indicated that the majority of secreted proteins found in the medium from cultures without an adaptive response are those frequently associated with stress and inflammatory response.”

Lack of evidence for prescription of antepartum bed rest.
Expert Rev Obstet Gynecol. 2011 Jul 1;6(4):385-93.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22140399
NOTE: As the abstract mentions, this Perspective draws upon aerospace research using bed rest as a model for the argument against the routine prescription of bed rest before birth. The author suggests a number of reasons why such bed rest is still prescribed, including: “Research documents that most obstetric healthcare providers are unaware of the adverse effects of bed rest or they believe that effects are of minor consequence [refs]. Therefore, continued use appears to be due to a lack of knowledge or attention to research regarding effectiveness and the adverse side effects, or a discounting of the evidence [refs]. One possible reason could be because obstetric providers primarily read medical research while the majority of evidence regarding the side effects of bed rest in nonpregnant and pregnant individuals is produced by other related disciplines.”
