NASA MODIS Image of the Day: February 13, 2012 – Andaman Islands
On February 8, 2012 the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of the Andaman Islands.
The Andaman archipelago consists of more than 500 islands lying east of India, between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
Though they are a part of India politically, they are physically closer to Myanmar and Thailand than to the Indian mainland. The main islands, seen here, are grouped together and called Great Andaman. Although Great Andaman looks almost like a single island, close inspection will show that it is comprised of five major islands. From north to south, they are North Andaman, Middle Andaman, South Andaman, Baratang and Rutland Island. Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, lies on the southeast side of South Andaman. The lone oval island in the south is Little Andaman.
