NASA MODIS Image of the Day: January 17, 2012 – Snow in the Balkans and Turkey
A covering of snow laid across much of the Balkans and Turkey on January 3, 2012 when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this true-color image.
Turkey is the country lying in the southeast section of the image.
To the northwest is the bulk of the Balkan region, an area encompassing more than 700,000 square kilometers across southeastern Europe. While the names of the countries in this region have changed over time, the following countries are generally considered part of the Balkan region: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Republic of Macedonia, Serbia as well as the European half of Turkey. The body of water in the north is the Black Sea, and the Aegean Sea lies to the south. The Adriatic Sea can be seen in the southwest.
