NASA MODIS Image of the Day: June 5, 2011 – Smoke from Russian fires over the Sea of Okhotsk
A mass movement of smoke from Siberian fires floats over the Sea of Okhotsk, which rims the Pacific Ocean.
A large cloud of smoke can be seen on the left side in this image.
NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of the fires on May 31, 2011 at 01:25 UTC (9:45 p.m. EDT). The image was created from visible imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard Terra. The areas of fires are identified by the red dots. A total of 9,750 wildfires have broken out since the beginning of the 2011 wildfire season, mostly in remote parts of Siberia and the Urals, according to Russian Emergencies Ministry.
